The “alarming” frequency of traffic accidents in the National Capital Region has prompted the government and the corporate sector to collaborate on the creation of a road safety strategy.
\nThe Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) stated in a statement on Tuesday that the Metro Manila Road Safety Action Plan (MMRSAP) 2024\u20132028 intends to decrease traffic deaths by 35% by the year 2028.
\n. Over the previous ten years, the Metro Manila Accident Reporting and Analysis System has reported around 92,583 traffic crashes annually or an average of 410 fatalities annually.
\nAccording to the MMDA, 51% of these fatalities include drivers, 36% involve pedestrians, and 13% involve passengers.
\nThe Policy Center, the World Health Organization – Philippines, and the Department of Transportation (DOTr) all backed the MMDA proposal.
\nAmong the parties involved in the creation of the action plan were the local government units in Metro Manila, the Department of Public Works and Highways, the Department of Health, the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board, and the Land Transportation Office.
\nThe topics of discussion at their meeting included post-crash response, safer automobiles, safer roads, safer road users, and road safety management.
\nAccording to the MMDA, the road safety action plan is a component of Project 6: Traffic Safety and Education, which is financed by the Japan International Cooperation Agency and is part of the 5-Year Action Plan of the Comprehensive Traffic Management Plan for Metro Manila.
\nAccording to Paulo Mejia, a DOTr Project Evaluation Officer, “road safety is a shared responsibility.”
